What is a round robin?
A round robin is the fairest format for a league or group. Every entrant, whether a singles player or a doubles team, plays every other entrant the same number of times. There is no luck of the draw and no early knockout: final standings reflect how everyone did against the whole field, which is exactly why leagues, box leagues and group stages use it.
How the schedule is built
This generator uses the circle method. One entrant is fixed and the rest rotate one position each round, which guarantees every pairing happens exactly once and no entrant is drawn twice in the same round. Home and away alternate round by round so no one is always listed first. If you pick a double round robin, the whole schedule runs again with home and away reversed, so everyone meets twice.
Byes for odd numbers
With an odd number of entrants a clean pairing is impossible, so one entrant has to rest each round. The generator handles this by adding a phantom bye, then spreading the byes evenly so every entrant sits out exactly once across the full schedule. An odd field simply takes as many rounds as there are entrants: five players run over five rounds, with one player resting each week.
How many rounds and matches to expect
For an even field of N entrants a single round robin is N minus one rounds, with N divided by two matches in each round. The total number of matches is N times N minus one, all over two. So 4 entrants is 3 rounds and 6 matches, 8 entrants is 7 rounds and 28 matches, and 16 entrants is 15 rounds and 120 matches. A double round robin doubles both figures. If that is more matches than your season has weeks, add courts so several matches share a round, or split a large group into two smaller round robins.
Singles, doubles, courts and dates
For doubles, enter two players per line-up and the tool pairs them into fixed teams before scheduling. Add a court count to spread each round’s matches across the courts you have, and a start date to stamp each round a week apart. When you are happy, copy the schedule, download it as a CSV for a spreadsheet, or print it for the noticeboard.
Frequently asked questions
How many rounds and matches does a round robin have?
With an even number of entrants, a single round robin runs for one fewer round than the number of entrants, so 8 players play 7 rounds. Each round has half as many matches as there are entrants (8 players is 4 matches a round). In total everyone plays everyone once, which is N times N minus one, divided by two matches. For 8 players that is 28 matches. An odd number of entrants takes the same number of rounds as there are entrants, because one entrant rests each round.
What happens with an odd number of players?
The generator adds a phantom bye entrant so the maths still works. Each round, exactly one real entrant is paired with the bye and sits that round out. Over the full schedule every entrant sits out once, and no one is ever scheduled twice in the same round.
What is the difference between single and double round robin?
In a single round robin everyone plays everyone once. In a double round robin everyone plays everyone twice, typically once at home and once away. A double round robin has twice as many rounds and matches, which is useful for longer seasons or to reduce the luck of a single result.
Is the fixture generator free?
