Round robins for tennis box leagues

A tennis box league is a set of small round robins. Split your players into boxes of four to six by ability, generate one schedule per box, and at the end of the round move the top players up and the bottom players down. A box of four is three matches each, a box of five is four, and a box of six is five, so pick the size your players can realistically fit into a four to six week round.

Choosing a tennis match format

The schedule tells you who plays whom; the match format decides how long it takes. Best of three sets gives the fairest result but is the hardest to book. One set to six games with a tiebreak, or a short match of the best of nine games, fits a round robin into limited court time. Whichever you pick, make it the same for every match in the group.

Singles or doubles

For singles, list one player per line. For doubles, switch to doubles and list the players in order: each consecutive pair of names becomes a fixed team, and the teams are then scheduled against each other exactly as singles players would be.

Frequently asked questions

How many matches are in a tennis round robin?

Everyone plays everyone once, so the total is N times N minus one, divided by two. Four players is 6 matches, six players is 15 and eight players is 28.

How many players should a tennis box have?

Four to six. Four keeps the commitment light at three matches each, five is a good middle ground, and six suits keen players and longer rounds.

Can I use this for a doubles round robin?

Yes. Switch to doubles and enter the players in order; each consecutive pair becomes a fixed team and the teams play a full round robin.

Is the tennis round-robin generator free?

Yes. It needs no account and runs entirely in your browser, so your player names never leave your device. You can copy the schedule, download it as a CSV or print it.
